Region of Durham
The Region of Durham situated in the Golden Horseshoe, owns and operates 6 surface water supply plants. Of these, 5 systems draw water from Lake Ontario, and 1 from Lake Simcoe. The Region is responsible for supplying water to eight area municipalities: including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Bowmanville, and Beaverton, and services approximately 500 000 residents.

City of Toronto
Canada's largest city, the City of Toronto supplies water to 2.4 million Toronto residents and 400 000 residents in York Region through the operation of four water treatment plants drawing water from Lake Ontario.

Region of Peel
The Region of Peel is the second largest municipality in Ontario. With two water treatment facilities drawing water from Lake Ontario, the Region supplies water to over 1 000 000 Peel residents in Mississauga, Brampton and Bolton. The Region of Peel has also signed a long term agreement with the Region of York to supply water beginning in 2004.

Halton Region
The Region of Halton operates two surface water treatment plants. Drawing from Lake Ontario, they supply water to over 300 000 residents of the City of Burlington and the towns of Milton and Oakville.
 
City of Hamilton
The City of Hamilton now includes the former municipalities of Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Dundas, Ancaster, Waterdown, Flamborough and Glanbrook. The new City provides treated water from Lake Ontario to its population of 500 000. As well, it provides treated water to parts of the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk.
 
Region of Niagara
The Region of Niagara, made up of 12 unique and distinct local municipalities, operates and maintains seven surface water treatment plants drawing water from Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Niagara River and the Welland Canal. Regional Niagara water treatment facilities service over 400 000 people.
 
Ontario Power Generation
Ontario Power Generation Inc. is an Ontario-based electricity generation company whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario. Our focus is on the efficient production and sale of electricity from our generation assets, while operating in a safe, open and environmentally responsible manner.
 
Ontario Clean Water Agency
OCWA
is an agency of the Province of Ontario in the business of providing environmentally responsible and cost-effective water and wastewater services. OCWA currently operates over 500 facilities in 180 communities and serves an estimated 5 million Ontarians, making it the largest operator of water and wastewater facilities in Canada.

Scientific professionals from the National Water Research Institute (Environment Canada), the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Energy, in collaboration with the St Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science and several Ontario universities, especially the University of Waterloo carry out the needed research:

Taste and Odour in the Western Basin of Lake Ontario has been intensively studied by the Consortium since 1999. The attached algae project began in 2002.
